Truro's History

Truro is Cornwall's administrative capital and enjoys a thriving community based on commerce and tourism. Truro still thrives as a port, handling more goods than any other in the county.

The name Truro is believed to have come from Tri-veru, meaning three rivers, after the Kenwyn, the Allen and the Tinney. Together these form the Truro River which flows into the Carrick Roads and the River Fal.

There has been a settlement at Truro for centuries. It is thought our City began life as a Celtic village, and then became a Norman settlement in the 12th century when a castle was built high on the hill where the Crown Courts now stand.

Truro later became a stannary town, a place where tin was "assayed" - checked for quality and given a stamp. The metal would then be shipped out of the town along the river.

Truro was also once a bustling port. Vessels would moor up at Lemon Quay, an area now covered over and a vibrant public space. When a ship came into port, men would hurry through Truro's opes and alleyways to unload the cargo.

During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, tin prices rocketed and wealthy mine owners made Truro their home, building elegant town houses, some of which can still be seen today. Please see our section on buildings of interest.

Truro offered entertainment and amusement with balls and plays at the Assembly Rooms at High Cross. Educational lectures were available at the Royal Cornwall Institute.

In 1876 the Diocese of Truro was founded although re founded would be a better description as Cornwall had previously had its own Bishops. By 1877 Queen Victoria granted city status and Truro still is the only city in Cornwall.

The Truro Historical Project, was all about Truro and its Heritage, based upon a body of research undertaken by volunteers working on the project over two years. For more information visit the Truro Historical Project website click here
