Gardens Around Truro

Cornwall is renowned for its wonderful gardens’, but did you know that some of the most famous plants men were from this area including the famous Lobb brothers from Devoran

William and Thomas Lobb, young men, went to work as gardeners at the Carclew mansion of Sir Charles Lemon. They both later became internationally famous in the horticultural world for their plant-collecting journeys in America and Asia. William died in California but Thomas retired in Deovran. He died in 1894, and lies in Devoran Churchyard. The Lobb brothers introduced a huge range of plants to the United Kingdom including varieties of escallonias and rhododenrons. Some of the plants had the suffix ‘Lobbii’ added in their honour. In 1942 the Cornish-born Bishop of Truro, Dr J W Hunkin, conducted a ceremony in Devoran Churchyard dedicating a memorial garden to them.

Burncoose

This  30 acre woodland garden and is very similar in style to Caerhays as one would expect of a sister garden in the same ownership.
The garden is open to the public throughout the year. Alongside this is Burncoose Nurseries, a working nursery also open to the public 7 days a week, which specialises in the mail order business. The gardens have a long track record over 20 years of winning gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court Flower Show, NEC and Tatton Park as well as at many other county and regional shows both within the UK and also in Italy.
Less well known still is the fact that Burncoose is very much the retail side of the Caerhays Castle Gardens offering the very best of the magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons
